Nele

Hi, I’m Nele Leemans. I was a volunteer in Cape Coast, which is 7 hours traveling to Nsutam. However. I met someone (Jessica Neumann) who told me about the orphanage there. I was fascinated by what she told me about the orphanage and with the passion she told it. I really wanted to see that with my own eyes. The pastor of the orphanage was extremely friendly and welcoming, it was no problem for me to stay there for a week. So I did.
I had problems with my trip there, because apparently there are several Nsutam’s in that region. By accident I ended up in the wrong. However, this was quickly solved by the help of the pastor who travelled towards me and accompanied me for the rest of the trip to Nsutam.
When I arrived at the orphanage I immediately felt at home. The children who live there are amazing. It was fantastic to be with them, to play with them, to help the with all their work or homework, … They are extremely grateful for everything you do for them and it gives you an indescribable feeling when they’ll give you their smiles back for it.
My stay in the orphanage has really touched me. You learn to appreciate what you have and family gets a whole different meaning. The feeling you get is something I can not describe, but it’s something you have to experience yourself. These children are family to each other: the bigger ones help the smaller ones, they play together, solve quarrels together. They are the ones that make it work and it’s a life changing experience to be a part of it for a while.
